Dark Reckoning Unleashed

Brady Hartford paced up and down, his bare feet treading on the cool, polished oak boards of his study. He glanced uncertainly at the phone gripped in his hand. Feeling unsure was a foreign emotion for him. Feeling afraid was, too.

Carola Cachero’s number was on the screen, and over the past ten minutes, his finger had hovered over the Dial button at least ten times.

Should he call her? Was it the right thing to do or would this action come back to bite him?

He’d gotten back an hour ago from a trip to Tuscany where he’d spent a few days touring the area, staying in luxury hotels and private lodges, enjoying sunshine, fine wine, gourmet food, and all the other pleasures a man could desire. His companion had been a young model, a dark-haired, twenty-two-year-old beauty who’d provided top-class entertainment, both day and night. He’d said goodbye to her at the airport after his private jet had landed, and she’d taken a connecting commercial flight to New York. Perhaps he’d call her again sometime, perhaps he wouldn’t. She’d been fun to have along for a vacation, but now it was time to get back to real life.

He’d barely glanced at his phone while he’d been away, but now, back on home turf, he’d been hit by a double whammy of bad news.

Firstly, four of the six CEOs had been murdered. Four? He’d heard about Carson, of course, that he’d seen on the news, but he hadn’t heard about the others.

Dread and guilt flooded him in a sickening rush as he realized the implications. He and Carola Cachero were the only two of the six still alive? What in the hell’s name was going on? Was someone picking them all off, and if so, who?

Then, as he’d climbed into his limo for the ride home, the second double whammy had landed. One of the ‘beneficiaries’ of the Hartford’s Have a Heart charity he ran was a hospital in rural Peru. It was nice and far away, extremely remote, and it had been a very convenient place to keep on the books as a full-time recipient while ensuring that funds were filtered heavily through three of his own companies first (thank you Donor Scale) before finally seeping into the hospital. Enough to buy a couple of bandages a month and keep the staff canteen stocked.

And then last week, a damned American journalist had ended up there with a broken leg after a car crash and was now doing a massive exposé on the state of the place. People were dying there. People were literally dying in casualty due to the lack of resources, the absence of medications, and the scarcity of machines and generators to power them during the power outages that were sweeping the region. A lot of them wouldn’t have died at all if the hospital had been receiving ninety-five percent of the funding it deserved and which had been publicly announced to the American donors, instead of a meager three percent.
